It is caused by abnormal blood flow within the arteries of the neck or inside the ear, and is fairly rare. Possible causes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Fluid in the middle ear.<\/li><li>Ear infections. <\/li><li>High blood pressure.<\/li><li>Head and neck tumors.<\/li><li>Blocked arteries. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nonpulsatile tinnitus<\/strong> \u2013 ringing in the ears not accompanied by any type of rhythm \u2013 is considerably more common. It can be caused by a variety of conditions including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Presbycusis (age-related hearing loss).<\/li><li>Noise exposure.<\/li><li>Impacted earwax. <\/li><li>Otosclerosis (stiffening of the bones in the middle ear). <\/li><li>Meniere\u2019s disease. <\/li><li>TMJ disorders. <\/li><li>Ototoxic medications.<\/li><li>Thyroid conditions. <\/li><li>Head or neck trauma.<\/li><li>Acoustic neuromas. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tinnitus is also classified as being either <strong>subjective<\/strong> (heard only by the patient) or <strong>objective<\/strong> (ringing can be heard by an impartial observer, such as a doctor). Most cases of tinnitus are subjective in nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How Is Tinnitus Treated? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tinnitus can\u2019t be cured, but there are treatments that make it less of a distraction. The approach taken depends on the underlying condition responsible for the ringing in your ears. Sometimes, simple steps like removing built-up earwax or switching to a new medication can markedly decrease symptoms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others benefit from noise suppression therapy or masking techniques designed to cover up the ringing noise.
